Vercel Flat Rate CDN Hits GA for Pro: Traffic Spikes Stop Becoming Surprise Bills — Should You Switch?

Vercel announced on 2026-09-08 that Flat Rate CDN is now generally available for Pro teams. This is a billing change rather than a feature, and it deserves three minutes from anyone running a site with real traffic on Vercel. 1. The problem Vercel names

Vercel acknowledges that despite a year of Pro pricing improvements — expanded user roles, flexible credits, access to enterprise features — CDN pricing was the area customers kept giving feedback on: a viral launch, a traffic burst, or a misconfigured route could turn an otherwise normal month into an unexpected bill. In Vercel’s framing, that uncertainty made growth feel like a problem at exactly the moment it should feel exciting.

2. What Flat Rate CDN is

It is an alternative to usage-based CDN billing that trades variable cost for a predictable monthly bill. Vercel’s three stated advantages:

• Fixed monthly price for Vercel CDN.
• Covers traffic spikes: CDN Requests, Fast Data Transfer, and other resources are no longer billed directly, so spikes do not produce surprise bills.
• No overages: your bill will never increase because of temporary usage spikes.

3. What the capacity covers (from the GA entry)

Monthly Flat Rate CDN capacity includes:

• Fast Data Transfer
• Blob Data Transfer
• CDN Requests
• Observability events generated by CDN requests

Three rules that matter:

1. Capacity is set at the team level, not the project level — a spike on one project draws on the whole team’s allowance.
2. Pro includes 1M requests and 1 TB of data transfer. More capacity means upgrading to a higher Flat Rate CDN tier.
3. Spike protection is on by default: traffic above your tier’s capacity is served normally, without degraded performance, and is not billed — Vercel notes this is subject to fair use guidelines.

4. Who has to do something

Vercel is explicit:

• New Pro teams have Flat Rate CDN on by default.
• Existing teams switch over in Billing settings.

So if your team predates this and you have never opened Billing settings, you are still on usage-based billing, and spikes still cost you.

5. Our read: when to switch, when to leave it alone

Vercel did not publish the monthly price of each tier — both the blog post and the changelog say “upgrade to a higher tier” without listing figures — so whether this saves you money depends on your own bill, and we do not estimate. The decision rules:

• Spiky traffic (media sites, campaign pages, launch days) → flat rate is worth the most, because what you are buying is a bill ceiling, not a lower unit price.
• Low and steady traffic (small brochure sites, internal tools) → do the math first. If you are already far under 1M requests and 1 TB, moving up a tier will not save you anything.
• You need predictability more than the minimum (budget approvals, fixed-price client work) → a fixed number is itself the deliverable.

Practical step: open your billing page and look at CDN usage and cost for the last three to six months, paying particular attention to the worst month — that single month is where usage-based risk actually lives.

6. Read it alongside the same week’s other changes

Vercel’s recent entries cluster around money and security: in the same batch, Vercel Authentication protecting all deployments including production domains became free on every plan (it previously required a US$150-per-month add-on), while Password Protection moved to US$20 per project per month on Pro.
